About us

The Jean Monnet Inter-University Centre of Excellence Opatija is a centre for research and development of the University of Rijeka. It is an interdisciplinary forum for the promotion of research and teaching specialised in European integration studies. Established in 2010 as a result of cooperation between the Jean Monnet Chairs of the Faculty of Law, University of Rijeka and the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb, the work of the Centre was initially supported by the LLP – Jean Monnet Programme of the European Commission in the period 2010 – 2013.

The City of Opatija is supporting all of the activities of the Centre by providing conference facilities and office space.

Extraordinary Experiences

In order to achieve the above mentioned objectives, the Centre is committed to organizing seminars and conferences, professional training activities, developing graduate and postgraduate degree programs and pursuing multidisciplinary research in the field of European studies.

Dr Ana Pošćić is an associate professor and Head of Department of European Public Law at the University of Rijeka, Faculty of Law as well as head of the Inter-University Centre of Excellence Opatija. Since her employment at the Faculty, Dr. Pošćić has completed the postgraduate masters study program “Law of European Integration” at the same University, organised in cooperation with the Università degli studi di Macerata, Italy and Katholieke Universiteit Brabant - Tilburg University, participated actively in the accession negotiations of the Republic of Croatia to the European Union and has acquired her Dr. jur. degree at the Faculty of Law in Zagreb.

Dr Pošćić has undertaken research visits at the Max-Planck Institute for comparative and international Private law in Hamburg, European University Institute in Florence and the Europa Institute at Saarland University. She published a book “European Competition Law and Consumer Interests, a textbook “Regulation of Games of Chance in the EU” in co-authorship, as well as several scientific articles on various topics including Competition Law, Internal Market, Consumer Protection Law and EU Law. She is currently the head of a research project funded by the University of Rijeka “Digital transformation of society: Legal aspects”. She also participated as a member of the research team in various international and national scientific and research projects, including Jean Monnet Module “EU Social Security Law”, Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Activities 2016, Grant Agreement No. 2016-2151/001 (2016-2019), international scientific project under the SEELS Network “Education4Progress: Regional Cooperation to Improve EU Law Teaching“ (2018-2019, “Perspectives of maintaining the social state: towards the transformation of social security systems for individuals in personalized medicine“ (2014-2018), “Flexicurity and new forms of work (challenges for modernization of the Croatian labour law)“ (2015-2018).

Dr Pošćić is co-holder of various EU law courses at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka, at undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate and doctoral law studies, including Lectures in European Law I, EU Social Security Law, Fundamentals of EU Law, Internal Market and Fundamental Freedoms, EU Labour Law, Corporate Acquisitions and Restructuring, European Company Law and Fundamental Freedoms, Competition Law and State Aid.

She is a director and lecturer at the life-long learning programme “Law in Medicine” as well as co-director of the “European Law and Economy Summer School ELESS.

Dr. Pošćić has passed the Bar Examination before the Croatian Ministry of Justice.

Graduated in 2004 at the Faculty of Law, University of Rijeka. Passed the Bar Exam in 2006. Acquired a Dr.iur. degree in 2014 at the Faculty of Law, University of Graz in Austria. From 2004 to 2008 worked as an attorney-at-law trainee at a law firm. From 2008 employed as scientific novice, from 2014 as a post-doc, from 2016 as assistant professor, and from 2022 as associate professor at the Department of European Public Law at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka. Academic coordinator of the Jean Monnet Module “EU Social Security Law”, Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Activities 2016, Grant Agreement No. 2016-2151/001 (2016-2019). Currently works on a project “Digital transformation of society: Legal aspects”, funded by the University of Rijeka, “Integration and disintegration of the European Union: Dynamics of Europeanism and Euroscepticism” (2020-2025), funded by the Croatian Science Foundation, and “Praxis Iuris: Besplatna primarna pravna pomoć i stručna praksa na Pravnom fakultetu u Rijeci” (Free primary legal aid and professional practice at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka) (2020-2023). Deputy head of the Inter-University Centre of Excellence Opatija. Member of European Equality Law Network – national expert for gender equality for Croatia.
Scientific interests and research include various areas of EU law, EU citizenship, social security law and gender equality and non-discrimination law.
